Transferring a .com.au domain to weauto

What we need to take over hosting and DNS for an existing .com.au domain.

The short version

You don't actually need to transfer the domain to use weauto. You just need to point its DNS at our servers — the domain stays in your name and your registrar account. See the DNS setup guide for step-by-step instructions.

A full domain transfer (moving the registration itself) is only needed if you want us to manage renewal billing on your behalf. Most customers don't need this — keep your domain where it is.

When to do a full domain transfer

  • You're consolidating multiple domains and want everything in one place.
  • Your current registrar is unreliable or has poor support.
  • You want us to handle annual renewal so it doesn't lapse.

What we need from you for a full transfer

  1. Auth code (also called transfer code or EPP code) from your current registrar. They'll email it to the registered contact within 1–2 business days of you requesting it.
  2. Confirmation that you're the registrant (the legal owner) of the domain.
  3. The ABN the domain is registered against (required for .com.au by auDA).
auDA rule: .com.audomains are tied to an Australian business (ABN/ACN). Both old and new registrar accounts must reflect the same ABN. We can't transfer a .com.au registered to a different entity than your business.

How to request the auth code

The wording varies by registrar, but you're looking for something like:

  • "Domain Transfer" or "Outbound Transfer" or "Get Auth Code"
  • Sometimes under Domain SettingsTransfer Lock

You may also need to:

  • Disable the transfer lock on the domain.
  • Confirm the registered email is current (the auth code goes there).

Once you have the auth code, email it to hello@weauto.organd we'll initiate the transfer on our end.

How long does it take?

  • Just pointing DNS (recommended for most): minutes. Guide here.
  • Full domain transfer: 5–7 business days, fully automated by auDA.

During a full transfer, your existing site keeps working — there's no downtime.

Domain renewal cost

If we manage your domain after transfer, renewal is at-cost — typically $15–$22 AUD per year for a .com.au, billed once per year. We'll remind you 30 days before renewal.

If you're a retainer customer, domain renewal is included.

What if I don't have a domain yet?

The first year of a .com.auis included in your $299 weauto package. We'll suggest options that fit your business name during the build, register the one you pick, and handle DNS on your behalf — you don't need to do anything.

Still stuck? Email hello@weauto.org and we'll sort it.
