Our story
Started with a single ute and a love of growing things.
Fernside began in 2011 when Dan Whitmore left a corporate landscaping firm to do things properly — no shortcuts, no imported annuals that die in six months, just honest landscape work that respects the climate and the client.
Today we're a team of six, still working mostly across Epping, Carlingford, North Rocks, and the wider Hills District. Every garden we build comes with a two-year plant warranty and a maintenance guide written for that specific yard.

How much does a new garden design cost?
Every project is different, but most residential installs in the Hills District range from $4,500 to $25,000 depending on size, materials, and complexity. We always provide a detailed written quote before any work begins.
Do you offer ongoing maintenance?
Yes — we offer seasonal maintenance packages for existing gardens. Priority scheduling is available for clients whose garden we originally designed.
How long does a typical project take?
A standard backyard transformation (design, prep, planting) typically takes 3–7 days on-site. More complex projects with retaining walls or irrigation can take 2–3 weeks.
Do you use native plants?
We strongly recommend incorporating Australian natives suited to your local conditions. They require less water, support local wildlife, and perform far better long-term than exotic species.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Fernside holds a NSW Contractor Licence and full public liability insurance. We're happy to provide documentation at time of quoting.
